What is Medicare Health Insurance?

What is Medicare Health Insurance? Medicare was established in 1965, and is a U.S. Government Administered Health insurance Program for people age 65 and older; people under age 65 with certain disabilities, and people of all ages with kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant. Most people become eligible the month they turn 65.

The easiest way to apply for Medicare is directly from the social security website at www.socialsecurity.gov. You can also call 1-800-772-1213, or you can also go in person to your local social security office. If you are in the Portland area there is a local office in Beaverton and one in Portland, Oregon.

Medicare advantage plans

Advantage or Medigap? We’ll help you size up what will serve you and your health best.

There are many Advantage plans on the market and you need to find a plan that is available in the area you live in. Most of these plans use a PPO network and you must make sure your doctor is an in-network provider. Advantage plans work similar to health insurance: you have a copay at the doctor and usually a copay for hospitalization, surgeries and other procedures. There is a yearly limit to your out-of-pocket expenses which may vary widely. The real advantage to these plans is that many of them offer Alternative care, Vision Care and many offer some Dental. Usually your Prescription drug plan is part of your monthly premium.

Have a question?

Medigap

The peace-of-mind plan for many.
These are excellent plans and you do not have to worry about choosing any network of doctors. The nice thing about Medigap Plans is that once you choose your plan in Oregon, all insurance companies must offer exactly the same coverage. For many, the Medigap plan G presents the best plan options available. If you are on a MEDIGAP plan you are able to change plans on your birthday from one Medigap plan to another without going through underwriting. This will allow you to shop your plan the month of your birthday. With a Medigap plan G, you will have little to no medical expenses.

As with any plan, it’s critical that you confirm that your chosen medical providers will accept patients with Medicare–not all of them do. You must find your own Prescription Drug Plan. In the past, these plans have not paid for glasses, hearing aids, or dental services and have had minimal Alternative Care benefits. Times are changing though, so you will want to discuss what options are available to you close to the time you need to sign-up; don’t rely on information from past years.

Prescription Coverage

An important part of your coverage!

With your Advantage Plan you will generally just take the prescription plan that goes with the plan you are on. With a Medigap plan, you will have to choose your own prescription plan. 411MedicareOR represents many Rx plans. If it’s not the right one for you, we will help you find one better suited.

What do we most frequently recommend? If you go to www.medicare.gov and click on the prescription link, you will be able to find the least expensive plan for the specific medications you are currently taking and apply right on line.
